B
is for Brisbane
Artists from Queensland’s Monte Lupo program at
Eight Mile Plains got the chance to showcase their
work during the recent G20 Summit, decorating
the letter ‘B’ for a giant ‘Brisbane’ sign installed for
the event.
Taking pride of place at Brisbane Southbank’s Cultural
Forecourt, the sign was three metres high and over
25
metres long, with each letter decorated by a local
community association.
Monte Lupo spokesperson Fiona Haynes said the sign
was used as a backdrop for the world’s media during
the Summit.
The creative decoration of the letter was inspired by
Brisbane City, with its unique design reflected by iconic
landmarks including the Brisbane River and city skyline,”
Fiona said.
The symbolic structure will remain as a representation
of the collective diversity of Brisbane’s contemporary
communities and the not-for-profit associations who
contribute enormously to them.”
Monte Lupo, an initiative of high-needs disability support
organisation Multicap, provides creative and supportive
employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
from the editor
This edition we put
the spotlight on
supported employment
-
an area that’s facing
considerable change
due to the NDIS and the
move to a productivity-
based wage tool. From
the real-life stories of
supported employees
to the views of some of
the industry’s leading
figures, we hope you enjoy
catching up on news from
this important sector. We
also take a look at the needs
of Indigenous people with
disability and meet the CEO
of the First Peoples Disability
Network, Damian Griffis,
while Ken Baker from National Disability Services shares his
thoughts on how the NDIS is tracking.
In this edition we also take a sneak peak at British entertainer
Mat Fraser’s new show, Beauty & the Beast - an adults-only
take on the classic fairytale, and meet two winners of the
Nova Focus on Ability film competition. Paralympian Lindy
Hou tells us how sport helps her maintain a positive attitude,
while in music we review the latest album from controversial
American ‘krip hoppers’ Kounterclockwise.
The Link team is also delighted to announce that we’re now
part of Minda - South Australia’s largest non-government
disability service provider. As you probably know, Link is
published by Inprint Design, which is owned by non-profit
supported employment provider, SA Group Enterprises
(
SAGE) - and SAGE recently amalgamated with Minda. For
Link and Inprint, it’s business as usual, so keep sending in
your contributions, story ideas and letters - we love them!
I hope you enjoy reading our December edition and wish all
Link readers, supporters, industry colleagues and advertisers
a safe and happy festive season.
See you in April 2015.
